Jesse Helms is dead. Helms saw himself as a redneck protecting simple American values from the onslaught of permissiveness, foreign influence and moral relativism. Simple minded, yes; pig headed, yes; but at least not as much of a hypocrite as his orange haired asshole buddy Strom Thurmond. A fan of segregation, Helms learned early in his political career to demonize his opponents and to appeal to the base fears of ignorant people; who responded by regularly electing him to represent their interests.
